What is a Women’s Guild?
The Guild is a group of like minded women who enjoy getting together on a regular basis socially and prayerfully and who are willing to give help and support where and when needed in the parish.
Why do we have Women’s Guild at St Pauls and what do they do?
It is necessary to have an organised group so that the women can respond as a group, rather than as individuals, to the declared and perceived needs of the parish and to the wider community in and around Dover as well as and the wider world. The group also provides members who fulfil the ministries of church and parish centre cleaning as well as providing refreshments after the 9.30am and 11am Sunday Masses on other special occasions such as providing the First Holy Communion breakfast and other events.
When was the Women’s Guild established?
The Guild was established in 1974 and this year celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Does the women’s guild have a patron?
The patroness of the Guild and hence one of the Guild standard prayers is to St Margaret Clitherow.
Who is eligible to become a member?
Normally members are women who are practising Catholics but non catholics can also be members subject to circumstances.
How does one join the Women’s Guild?
Make application to the secretary of the guild either personally or by phone, letter or email requesting membership and pay the £1 annual membership fee. Each new member is given a guild membership card containing the opening prayer, prayer to St Margaret Clitherow and a closing prayer.
How often does the women’s group meet?
The Women’s Guild meets on the first Wednesday of each calendar month.
Where does the Guild meet and for how long?
The monthly meetings are held in the Parish Hall, immediately adjacent to the church. Meetings commence at 2.30 pm and finish at 4pm.
What happens at a Women’s Guild meeting?
Monthly meetings begin with the reciting of the guild opening prayer and prayer to St Margaret Clitherow. Apologies for absence are noted and sick and ill members prayed for. The minutes of the previous meeting are read and approved. Agenda items are discussed. Occasionally a speaker is booked or a quiz held. A raffle and the sharing of refreshments are regular occurrences.

Is the Women’s Guild involved in charitable giving?
The money raised from: 1) the weekly purchase or refreshments following the 9.30 and 11 am Sunday masses 2) monthly raffles, and 3) other fund raising activities such as: sale of ‘bric a brac,’ pancake evening and special coffee morning is used to fund charity work.
Which good causes have benefited from receiving money from the Women’s Guild?
Many good causes that benefit from Guild donations, some on an annual basis, are decided upon at the AGM held in January by members voting. All members can nominate ‘good causes’ to be considered. To date (Oct 2014) £700 has been distributed from funds raised this calendar year. A list of recipients is usually published in the parish news letter and includes MacMillan Cancer Nurses, Pilgrims Hospice, Apostleship of the Sea, St Pauls Church and 13th Dover Scouts and Fr Roy Pearce (Pakistan).

Prayer to St Margaret Clitherow and closing prayers said by the Guild members at their meetings? Amen Prayer to St Margaret Clitherow O God, who didst raise up the glorious Martyr St Margaret Cliterow to be a pattern of womanhood mercifully grant us the grace to walk in her ways and win the crown of the Blessed. Amen Closing Prayers Prayer to Saint Anne* Mother of Mary O God who didst design to bestow such grace on Blessed Anne that she was worthy to hear blessed Mary, thy Mother, grant us through the intercession of both Mother and Child the abundance of Thy mercy that as we devoutly and lovingly esteem their memory we may, through their prayers be worthy to come to the heavenly Jerusalem.
